Move-In Checklist for Renters: What to Do Before You Unpack

Step 1: Document the Condition Before You Touch Anything

Walk through every room with your phone and photograph every wall, floor, appliance, and fixture — even minor scuffs or marks. Email these photos to your landlord with the date in the first 24 hours. This is your protection against being charged for pre-existing damage at move-out.

Step 2: Clean Before Unpacking

Cleaning an empty unit is far faster and more thorough than cleaning around furniture. Book a professional move-in clean or do a full clean before the first box is placed — inside all cabinets, bathroom completely, appliances inside and out.

• Check inside refrigerator — previous tenant's spills may be inside
• Run dishwasher empty to check for standing water or debris
• Wipe inside all cabinets and drawers
• Clean bathroom thoroughly before personal items are placed
• Check for mold in bathroom caulking or under sink

Step 3: Test Everything and Report Issues

Test every light switch, outlet, appliance, HVAC function, and lock. Report any non-functioning items in writing (email) to the landlord immediately — this starts the clock on their obligation to repair and prevents any 'that was already broken' dispute later.
